Common Questions About Custom Cardboard Boxes Answered

Enhancing your brand image with custom cardboard boxes is a big decision. The unboxing experience shapes your customers’ first impressions and strongly impacts their purchasing choices. To help you choose the right business packaging solution for your company, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions from first-time buyers ordering custom cardboard boxes.

What Are Custom Cardboard Boxes?

Custom cardboard boxes are packing containers designed to meet specific dimensions, materials, and branding needs for a specific business or product. Stock boxes, like those offered by Uline, are plain and utilitarian—useful for basic moving and storage, but not ideal for marketing. When it comes to branded packaging, the choice between stock Uline versus custom boxes is clear.

How Are Custom Cardboard Boxes Different From Stock Boxes?

Stock boxes are pre-fabricated in standard sizes with standard surfaces. Custom cardboard boxes offer a range of unique features to make your brand stand out.

  • Size: Custom box dimensions are made to fit your items specifically, reducing unnecessary void space and material overuse.
  • Printing: Select images, messaging, and full-color printing options for custom shipping boxes, rather than plain white or brown stock boxes with no marketing details.
  • Branding: Custom mailer boxes with logos, fonts, and colors bring attention to your brand. Ordinary stock boxes don’t offer these branding and marketing features.
  • Inserts: Custom inserts like coupons and thank-you messages create a personalized feel you simply can’t get with stock packaging.

What Types of Products Can They Be Used For?

Custom cardboard boxes are versatile, providing companies across many industries with a branded custom shipping solution for a range of products.

  • eCommerce Shipments: Online shops use small business custom packaging solutions to ship everything from skincare and cosmetic products to apparel and accessories.
  • Retail Packaging: From small businesses to giant box stores, retail establishments create unique, brand-specific shipping box solutions for customer shipments.
  • Subscription Boxes: Recurring subscription boxes for cosmetics, accessories, and other products use branded shipping boxes to create a memorable unboxing experience every time.
  • Promotional Kits: Create stunning promotional kits that boost your brand visibility through eye-catching graphics, brand colors, and custom inserts.

What Materials Are Used for Custom Cardboard Boxes?

Custom cardboard boxes are typically made from corrugated cardboard, which offers exceptional durability and protection during shipping.

What is Corrugated Cardboard?

Corrugated cardboard is a heavy, paper-based material used in shipping boxes, food packaging, and lightweight retail displays, among other applications. It’s made from paper fluted in a zigzag or wavy pattern placed between two pieces of durable paper liner.

What Flute Types Are Available?

Box Genie offers two standard flute types and one specialty type (double-wall) upon your request. All three flute types are tailored to your needs:

  • E-Flute: Our E-flute corrugated material is approximately 1/16” thick. It is lighter and thinner than B-flute, with a smooth surface ideal for vivid, high-resolution printing. We recommend it for mailers and small business shipping boxes where visual impact is a priority.
  • B-Flute: B-flute corrugated material is our standard option for shipping boxes. It is thicker and more durable than E-flute at 1/8” thickness. It takes up more space, and the thicker waves may be visible under high-resolution graphics. However, B-flute provides excellent resistance to crushing and punctures, making it ideal for heavy, high-volume product shipments.
  • Double-Wall: If your product needs extra protection and support for heavy, fragile, or high-stacked items, look to our double-wall corrugated boxes. This exceptionally durable option features two layers of fluted paper sandwiched between three flat liner boards, for optimal protection in warehousing and shipping operations.

How Do I Choose the Right Custom Box Size?

To select the right custom box size, measure your product’s dimensions and then create a small buffer to ensure space for packing material.

Why Does Box Size Matter?

Choosing the right box size protects your products and your budget. Boxes that are too large may cause your product to rattle around and break. Too small, and you might not have space to fit protective insulation material.

Right-sizing boxes also keeps your material and shipping costs down. Larger boxes cost more, and they are more expensive to ship. Your customers also get a better unboxing experience when they don’t have to deal with unnecessarily bulky packaging or broken products from too-small containers without sufficient padding.

How Do I Measure My Product for a Custom Box?

Measure your product’s length on its longest side. Then measure the width front-to-back at its widest point. Finally, measure the depth of the product from top to bottom at the tallest point.

These basic measurements will give you the exact interior dimensions to fit the product, but you need to add an additional 1/16” for padding. If your product is fragile, leave more space for enough insulation to prevent breakage.

Can I Add My Logo to Custom Shipping Boxes?

Yes, using Box Genie’s custom packaging design tool, you can add your brand’s logo, messaging, color scheme, and other company-specific printed designs to your shipping boxes. Box Genie’s box packaging templates make it easy for you to input your design and create a professional packaging dieline for your project. Learn more about packaging dieline box templates here

What Printing Options Are Available?

Box Genie offers premium digital printing to produce vivid, clear graphics on your custom packaging. We also provide specialty lithographic and flexographic printing services to meet unique printing needs.

Are Custom Shipping Boxes With Logo Printing Expensive?

You don’t have to break your budget to get eye-catching custom shipping boxes with your brand logo. Keep your product packaging cost-effective by ordering in bulk, limiting printing surfaces to one side (interior or exterior), right-sizing your boxes, and limiting lithographic and flexographic prints to only one or two colors.

What Is the Minimum Order Quantity for Custom Cardboard Boxes?

Minimum order quantities for custom cardboard boxes differ between companies. At Box Genie, we understand the value of purchasing low quantities when needed, so we offer a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 100 box units.

Can Small Businesses Order Low Quantities?

Yes, small business packaging comes in order quantities as low as 100 box units through Box Genie.

How Does Ordering More Affect Pricing?

Typically, your custom cardboard box cost per unit is lower when you purchase in higher volumes. This is because the box manufacturer spends the same amount of time and labor for 100 boxes as they would for 1,000, making it more cost-effective per box.

Production runs can also continue without interruption for high-volume orders, making the manufacturing process more efficient. In addition, the packaging maker can get discounts on bulk materials for high-volume runs. Box Genie passes the savings, reduced costs, and enhanced efficiencies on to the consumer as bulk discounts.

How Much Do Custom Cardboard Boxes Cost?

Custom cardboard boxes vary in price depending on your order details, including box size, order volume, and printing requirements. Box Genie’s online design tool shows pricing per unit, so you can decide which design features best meet your financial requirements.

What Factors Influence Pricing?

The following factors influence pricing for your custom cardboard box order:

  • Material: Brown Kraft paper boxes are the least expensive per unit, but do not provide the same color clarity as white boxes. Our Essential White corrugated cardboard is slightly more expensive, with a satin finish ideal for all print designs and colors. Premium Magic White is the most expensive box material, with a photo-quality, glossy finish.
  • Order Volume: Typically, you get a better price for higher volume orders.
  • Inside and Outside Printing: You can apply digital designs inside and outside the box, but the number of printed sides increases your costs.
  • Box Size: Larger boxes use more material, so they are generally more expensive. They are also more costly to ship.
  • Printed Colors: Specialty flexographic and lithographic printing gets more expensive the more colors you use.
  • Shipping: Every time you order boxes, you pay for shipping. So, small box orders can cost you significantly more over time than ordering large quantities less frequently.

How Can I Keep Costs Down Without Sacrificing Quality?

Keep costs low by choosing the smallest possible boxes to accommodate your product and padding. Rather than placing small orders on an as-needed basis, assess your needs for a longer period and buy in bulk at a discount.

When it comes to imagery and visuals, opt for simple, elegant designs on the box exterior, rather than two-sided printing. If flexographic and lithographic styles suit your brand, stay within your custom box budget by limiting the number of colors for your design.

How Long Does it Take to Receive Custom Boxes?

For standard custom box production, you can expect to receive them within about two weeks. However, production can take longer if you have oversized boxes or specialty printing requirements.

What is the Typical Production Timeline?

Box Genie’s standard production timeline is 10-12 business days after artwork approval. As soon as you complete your box design and submit your order, we begin turning your packaging ideas into reality.

Can Custom Boxes Be Rushed?

At Box Genie, we understand that business needs change quickly. To accommodate your marketing needs, we offer rush services for an additional cost.

Are Custom Cardboard Boxes Eco-Friendly?

Box Genie offers custom eco-friendly boxes along with several additional options to boost sustainability.

Are Corrugated Boxes Recyclable?

Yes, corrugated boxes are recyclable. In fact, the American Forest and Paper Association reports that cardboard is one of the most recycled materials in the U.S. More than 33 million tons of cardboard were recycled in 2025 alone.

Can Businesses Choose Sustainable Packaging Options?

Box Genie offers several sustainable packaging options for your custom shipping and mailing boxes. In addition to recyclable corrugated cardboard, we offer recyclable packing materials and right-sizing to reduce packaging waste.

What Should I Look for When Choosing a Custom Packaging Supplier?

When choosing the right custom box supplier for your operation, look for a company that can meet your order requirements, including low minimum order volumes and quick turnaround times tailored to your shipping needs.

A good custom packaging supplier should also have high material quality and exceptional printing capabilities, as well as readily available support. Look for a company that has clear pricing details, without hidden fees. Customer reviews are a great way to see whether a company has a good reputation. Check Trustpilot and other review sites to see if the company is a good fit for you.
