How do I find the measurements for my box?

Please note that it is an industry standard to almost always present the inside packaging measurements of custom boxes. These are displayed as L x W x D (Length x Width x Depth) in the unit of inches.

  1. Lay out the item or items on a table or flat surface just as you wish to display them in the final packaging.
  2. Measure and record the L x W x D.
  3. Finally, round up to the nearest 1/16 of an inch for each measurement. This will ensure every item is packaged just right.
Do you have design guidelines for me to reference?

Yes! Please reference our Design Guidelines for our full set of best practices.

What are your color settings?

Box Genie printers print in Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black) also known as CMYK. As a G7® Certified Printer, we use GRACoL® 2013 settings - a leading industry standard.

What is your recommended DPI for photos and images?

Our Pre-press Team strongly recommends a minimum final resolution of 300 DPI. Resolution reduces when images are scaled up but improves with a reduction in final image size.

Please reference boxgenie.com/design-guidelines for more recommendations.

What are the blue and red lines on my Box Genie template?

These lines indicate areas where your box will be cut in production and fold in its final form.

  • Blue Lines: These are your box's cut lines.
  • Red Lines: These are your box's fold or crease lines.

Please note there is natural movement of box units during the cutting process. We recommend designing with full bleeds. Colors and graphics extending past cut (blue) lines are properly trimmed.

How do I design my custom box offline or in a different program?

Box Genie supports designs generated in a program outside of our online design tool.

Start by selecting your desired box type from boxgenie.com. Next, enter your box dimensions, paper type, and the number of printed sides (inside, outside, both). From here you will have two options:

  • Select "Order Now": You will receive email instructions on how to submit your design.
  • Select "Design Online": You will enter the 3D Design Tool. Choose "More" > "Download Template" from the left-hand panel.

Once your artwork is complete, revisit boxgenie.com. Submit your template from the "Upload Completed Template" option in the 3D Design Tool.

Alternatively, you may submit your template via live chat or email with a dedicated Box Genie representative. Our team suggests using Adobe Illustrator to create your artwork and convert it into a PDF. If you using Adobe Photoshop, you will need to design in CMYK at 300 DPI and 100% of the finished size. If using a different app or file type, please reach out to our Support Team (help@boxgenie.com) for assistance.

Note: It is important that you do not flatten your dielines into the graphics.

Can I save my designs?

Yes, you can save your custom box designs with a free Box Genie account. Save, modify, order, and reorder your packaging projects directly from your Box Genie account.

Will my artwork be reviewed before printing?

Box Genie's Customer Service team will review artwork for necessary technical changes. We define a technical change as a modification based on your order input. For example, a team member will process your order to confirm the validity of elements like one- versus two-sided print.

Templates are not revised for aesthetic or content reasons. Box Genie's Pre-Press Team will ensure that your files are ready for production.

Please review your design carefully before beginning the checkout process.

Can I use white ink in my design?

Box Genie's cutting-edge print technologies use the CMYK color spectrum. This is an industry best practice and one that does not include white inks. If using white in your designs (e.g. fonts, color blocking, highlights, etc.) we recommend choosing our Essential or Magic White paper types. These white-based papers will allow you to use white elements within your box artwork.

Can I print a QR code on my box?

Yes, we can print QR codes on your packaging. The recommended spec for a QR code is .5 x .5 inches. This will ensure the best performance for scannability.

Please review our QR Code Guide for optimal functionality.

Do you offer review cycles for custom inserts and dividers?

Before the structural design phase, our in-house experts will help you define the project scope and expectations of your inserts and dividers.

As part of this process, we offer a total of three revision cycles for custom-made inserts and dividers. Please note that any further modifications will result in an additional cost associated with these changes.

Here are some examples of what is considered to be a revision:

  • Changes to the product placement (e.g. alignment, layout, etc.)
  • Changes to the size of the outer box
  • Changes to the orientation of items (e.g. sideways rotation)
How many rounds of revisions do I get during proofing?

You’ll receive up to three free rounds of revisions during the digital proofing process. If you need additional changes after that, extra project costs may apply. To keep things smooth, we recommend sharing all feedback with your account manager at once.

For extra peace of mind, you can also preview your box design anytime using our 3D Preview tool in the Design Studio.

Can you design my box?

Are there limitations to what I can print?

You must have the rights to your images, logos, etc. for Box Genie to print these visual elements.

For details and further guidance on what can and cannot be printed, please kindly review our Terms of Service.

Material & Printing Options

Box Genie operates in Kansas City, Missouri. We are proud to use thoughtfully sourced American-made materials.

What paper types are available for my custom box?

We offer three distinct paper types for your box designs. Each material type is strikingly different from the other and serves a variety of ways to elevate and celebrate your brand's packaging. These materials include:

  • Kraft: A traditional brown paper perfect for darker colors.
  • Essential White: A matte finish white paper complete with a soft feel.
  • Magic White with HD Print: A semi-gloss white paper for an enhanced, eye-catching shine.

We recommend you experience Box Genie's offering first-hand with a pre-designed Sample Kit.

What material do you recommend for my box project?

Every packaging project we produce is completely custom in its nature. Your design is enhanced based on your paper type selection. As a rule of thumb, we recommend the following basic guidance:

  • Kraft: Ideal for an organic look and feel. Kraft holds dark colors especially well. Even lighter inks will print a few shades darker.
  • Essential White: Perfect for a softer look with its matte finish. Essential White is a more cost-efficient approach to quality print and color.
  • Magic White with HD Print: Your best choice for print and color richness. Please note that Magic White has a semi-gloss finish.

We recommend you experience Box Genie's offering first-hand with a pre-designed Sample Kit.

What is your approach to sustainability?

Box Genie is proud to be a subsidiary company of Vanguard Packaging -- one of North America's most sustainable packaging companies.

  • Materials: We selectively source 100% American-made inks, papers, and other materials.

  • Operations: Located 160 feet beneath the earth, our state-of-the-art geothermal Kansas City facility was developed to reduce our environmental footprint.
What is High Definition (HD) print?

Box Genie offers High Definition (HD) print for boxes made of our Magic White paper type. HD print uses small, targeted ink dots. This technique renders crisp, clean imagery along with consistent, precise color.

Our team highly recommends HD print for designs containing photos, swaths of color, and gradients.

The pallet is contained in a cardboard cap and then wrapped in industry-standard plastic wrapping for added protection.

LTL freight does not include guaranteed transit times, inside delivery, unpacking help, or pallet relocation such as movement to an alternative floor.
